The general chapter of 1642 and the schism among Dominicans was the subject of a famous printed text, the Dioptra transalpina duodecim radiis opticis concircinata, without date and typographic note, that appeared anonymously almost certainly at the beginning of 1643. Quétif and Échard, and subsequently Vigna, attributed it to the Spanish friar Tomás de Rocamora, one of the protagonists of the affair: J. Quétif and J. Échard, Scriptores Ordinis Praedicatorum, vol. II (Lutetiae Parisorum, 1721), 577; and A. Vigna, Il capitolo generale dei domenicani celebrato in Genova e Cornigliano Ligure nel 1642 (Genoa, 1897), 42-43. For the date of the Dioptra transalpina the terminus post quem is found in the nomination (p. 92) of Michele Mazzarino as master of the Apostolic Palace which took place in February 1643. Another pamphlet, the work of a supporter of Rocamora (which I was unable to locate), is rememberd by Theodor Ameyden: “S’è veduta una scrittura con titolo vita e morte del P. Mazarini, piena di picchi senza fallo dettatura di qualche frate della contraria fattione”: BCR, ms. 1831, “Diario della città, e corte di Roma notato da Deone,” f. 289.
